Tinubu Orders Release of Minors Arrested During Protests

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu ordered the release of minors arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests in August. The protests, which took place across the country, were sparked by economic reforms that led to rampant inflation and a severe cost-of-living crisis.

The President’s directive comes after widespread public outrage following the arrest and arraignment of 72 minors who faced charges including treason. At least 30 of the defendants were minors, whose arraignment sparked national and international condemnation.

The protests began in response to economic hardship and rising costs of living, with demonstrators demanding better opportunities and jobs for young people. The situation escalated, leading to clashes with security forces and resulting in at least 22 deaths, according to Amnesty International.

President Tinubu has vowed to pursue economic changes needed to keep the economy afloat, despite the severe financial crisis and widespread insecurity affecting the farming sector. The government’s response to the protests has been criticized, with many calling for accountability and justice for the victims.

The release of the minors is seen as a positive step, with Information Minister Mohammed Idris stating that the President is committed to democracy and the rule of law. A committee will investigate the circumstances surrounding the minors’ arrests, detention, and treatment, and law enforcement agents involved will face disciplinary action if necessary.
