Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Scoops Second Term as WTO Chief

By : Lloyd Mahachi

Nigerian economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second four-year term. This decision, made on Friday, marks a significant milestone for Okonjo-Iweala, who made history as the first African and first female leader of the WTO.

Her reappointment was widely anticipated, as she was the sole candidate nominated for the position. Some trade sources suggest her early reappointment could be an effort to preempt a potential veto by incoming U.S. President Donald Trump. However, the WTO has dismissed these claims. It is worth noting that Trump’s administration previously sought to block Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment in 2020.

Trump has often been critical of the WTO and, during his presidency, threatened to impose heavy tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China. Such actions would have violated U.S. trade commitments and escalated tensions with both allies and adversaries.

Despite these challenges, Okonjo-Iweala remains focused on delivering results that improve lives worldwide. She plans to take a constructive and creative approach in working with the new U.S. administration.

Her reappointment is a testament to her leadership and commitment to global trade. With a background as Nigeria’s finance minister and a distinguished economist, Okonjo-Iweala brings invaluable expertise to the role.

The WTO is navigating significant challenges, including trade disputes and tensions between member nations. Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership offers an opportunity for the organization to refocus on its core mission: promoting free trade and economic cooperation.

As global trade continues to evolve, the WTO must adapt to emerging issues. With Okonjo-Iweala at the helm, the organization is well-positioned to create a more stable and predictable trading environment.

Okonjo-Iweala’s second term is expected to be marked by both challenges and opportunities. Her leadership will be instrumental in guiding the WTO through complexities, fostering global trade, and improving lives worldwide. Her reappointment brings much-needed stability and continuity to the organization.
