Marburg Virus Outbreak in Rwanda Prompts US Embassy Precautions

Kigali, Rwanda – The Rwandan government has confirmed cases of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in local health facilities, triggering a cautious response from the US Embassy in Kigali. As a precautionary measure, US Embassy employees will work remotely from September 30 to October 4, 2024. During this period, all in-person services, including American Citizen Services and visa interviews, will be suspended.

This temporary measure ensures the safety of embassy staff and visitors while authorities assess the scope and severity of the outbreak. Marburg Virus Disease is a severe and highly contagious viral disease. Symptoms include sudden fever, chills, feeling sick, severe headache, body and back aches, and loss of appetite.

If you experience these symptoms or have been in close contact with someone suspected of having MVD, seek medical care immediately. US citizens in Rwanda and potential travelers are advised to take proactive steps. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important emergency information and updates from Rwanda’s Ministry of Health.
