In a historic moment, Claudia Sheinbaum became Mexico’s first female president on October 1, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the country’s 200-year modern history. Sheinbaum’s inauguration was met with cheers of “Presidenta!” inside and outside Congress.

She began her presidency by thanking her mentor and predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, calling him “the most important political leader and social warrior in Mexico’s modern history.” López Obrador leaves office with high popularity ratings, leaving big shoes for Sheinbaum to fill. However, she stressed she’s not daunted, declaring, “It is time for women. Women have arrived to shape the destiny of our beautiful nation.”

Sheinbaum outlined her agenda, building on López Obrador’s vision for Mexico, dubbed “Mexican humanism.” She highlighted achievements from the past six years, including pulling 9.5 million Mexicans out of poverty and reducing unemployment. Her promises include consolidating healthcare and creating 300,000 new places in higher education.

Challenges lie ahead, particularly in tackling the raging drug war, especially in Sinaloa and Chiapas. Critics question whether Sheinbaum’s experience in improving security in Mexico City can be replicated federally. López Obrador’s influence will undoubtedly loom large.

Sheinbaum vowed to govern for all Mexicans, leveraging her knowledge and strength to defend Mexico. Millions of Mexicans supporting her will likely grant her a grace period, but pressure to succeed will be intense.

As she wrapped up her inaugural speech, Sheinbaum proudly declared, “I’m a mother, grandmother, scientist, woman of faith, and now, president!” Her rise to the presidency culminates her stellar career from student activist to climate scientist to mayor of Mexico City.

With Sheinbaum at the helm, Mexico embarks on a new chapter. Her historic win inspires hope for a brighter future. As she navigates challenges and opportunities, the world watches with interest.
