Gabon is gearing up for presidential elections on April 12, marking a significant step towards ending the military rule that began with a coup in August 2023. The council of ministers announced the election date, paving the way for a new leader to take the reins.
Interim President Brice Oligui Nguema, who led the military coup, is expected to run for president. Nguema seized power after ousting President Ali Bongo Ondimba, ending the Bongo family’s 55-year rule over the oil-rich nation.
In November, Gabon voted in favor of a new constitution, which provides for a maximum of two seven-year presidential terms, no prime minister, and no dynastic transfer of power. This move was seen as a step towards restoring constitutional rule.
However, some observers fear that the ruling military government may use the election process to maintain power. The new constitution has raised concerns about the potential for the military to retain control.
A new law passed on Monday allows military officials to stand in elections, subject to certain conditions. This means Nguema can run for president, despite initial uncertainty about his eligibility.
Gabon’s history has been marked by the Bongo family’s rule, with Ali Bongo serving for 14 years before being overthrown. His father, Omar, ruled for over 41 years. The opposition and military coup leaders accused the Bongo regime of widespread corruption and poor governance.
