Former President Edgar Lungu’s Bid for Third Term Rejected

By : Lloyd Mahachi

The Constitutional Court in Zambia has made a big decision. They have ruled that former President Edgar Lungu cannot run for president again. This decision is important because Lungu had said he wanted to be president again.

Lungu was president from 2015 to 2021. He became president after the death of President Michael Sata. The court said that the time Lungu was president from 2015 to 2016 counts as a full term. This means that Lungu has already had two terms as president. The constitution in Zambia says that a president can only have two terms.

Lungu is not happy with the court’s decision. He says that the decision was not fair. He thinks that his enemies are trying to stop him from being president again. Lungu has been accused of doing some bad things while he was president. He and his family are also facing some charges in court.

The court’s decision is good for Zambia. It shows that the country is following its constitution. It also shows that the courts in Zambia are independent and can make tough decisions. This is important for democracy.

Lungu’s party is still supporting him. They say that he will still be their candidate for president in 2026. But the court’s decision makes it clear that Lungu cannot be president again. It will be interesting to see what happens next in Zambia’s politics.

The people of Zambia are watching the situation closely. They want to make sure that their country is run fairly and honestly. The court’s decision is a step in the right direction. It shows that Zambia is committed to following its constitution and respecting the rule of law.

Lungu’s future in politics is uncertain. He may try to find another way to be involved in politics. But for now, it seems that his time as president is over. The court’s decision is a reminder that in Zambia, no one is above the law. Everyone must follow the constitution and respect the rules.
