In an emotional final address at the 2025 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the Bank’s President for the past decade, expressed deep gratitude to the individuals and institutions that shaped his transformative tenure.

A Special Moment of Reflection

Adesina’s speech, delivered in the presence of African heads of state, dignitaries, and development partners, was more than just a review of achievements. It was a sincere and personal tribute to those who supported him and the Bank’s mission over the past ten years.

“I wish to start first by saying thank you,” he began, acknowledging the remarkable support of Africa’s heads of state and government who trusted him to help realize their countries’ development ambitions.

Dr. Adesina offered special thanks to President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire, describing him as a “dear big brother and host,” and to all African heads of state and their representatives for their steadfast support. He recognized the governments and people of Côte d’Ivoire for their hospitality and partnership, noting that the Bank’s financing to the country grew by 500% during his tenure.

A Tribute to the Boards of Governors and Directors

The AfDB President extended heartfelt appreciation to the Boards of Governors and Directors, calling them pillars of strength and oversight. “You never doubted us,” he said, underscoring the confidence they placed in the Bank’s leadership.

The People Behind the Mission: Staff and Partners

In a touching moment, Adesina praised the AfDB staff for their tireless dedication, recalling “sleepless nights on missions” and acknowledging their exceptional commitment. “You, my staff, are the ones I will miss the most,” he said.

He also expressed profound gratitude to his wife, Grace, for her unwavering support throughout his presidency. “You stayed unshakeable by my side at all times… together, we gave the African Development Bank and Africa our all,” he said.

Gratitude to Nigeria and Supporters Worldwide

Dr. Adesina recognized his home country, Nigeria, and past and present leaders—including President Goodluck Jonathan, President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Vice President Kashim Shettima—for their critical support during his two terms. He also thanked global leaders, development partners, the African Union, and regional economic communities for their collaboration and belief in Africa’s potential.

Ending on a hopeful note, Adesina invoked God’s blessings for the Bank, its staff, its leaders, and all 81 shareholder countries. “Together, we collectively joined hands around the Baobab tree of Africa’s challenges and opportunities,” he said.

As the Bank transitions to new leadership, Dr. Adesina’s final speech stands as a testament to a decade of transformation built on collective vision and unwavering partnerships.
