Chiwenga Condemns Corruption in Zimbabwe

Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga has strongly condemned corruption in Zimbabwe, emphasizing that it undermines the country’s national interests and hinders its progress towards becoming an upper-middle-income society.

Chiwenga made these remarks while addressing thousands of mourners at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, where three national heroes were laid to rest. The event was a solemn occasion, with many in attendance paying their respects to the departed heroes.

However, the event was also marked by tensions between supporters of Chiwenga and those loyal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The two factions have been at odds over the issue of Mnangagwa’s term extension.

Mnangagwa’s loyalists are campaigning for the extension of his rule beyond 2028, in line with a ruling party resolution adopted at the party’s annual conference in Bulawayo last October. However, Mnangagwa has repeatedly stated that he is not interested in extending his term of office.

Despite this, the resolution has sparked fierce resistance from grassroots structures, including war veterans. The debate has highlighted the deep divisions within the ruling party and has raised concerns about the country’s democratic trajectory.

In his address, Chiwenga emphasized the need for Zimbabweans to unite and work towards a common goal. He stressed that the country’s progress depends on its ability to eradicate corruption and promote transparency and accountability.

Chiwenga’s remarks were echoed in a separate speech, where he advised individuals to act within the confines of the law. He warned that those involved in immoral acts would face the full wrath of the law.

The Vice-President emphasized that Zimbabweans deserve improved living conditions, including access to social amenities. He stressed that corruption must be eradicated to achieve this goal and ensure that the country’s resources are utilized for the benefit of all citizens.

Chiwenga’s strong stance against corruption has been welcomed by many, who see it as a step in the right direction towards addressing the country’s economic challenges. However, others have expressed skepticism, citing the need for concrete actions to back up the Vice-President’s words.

The fight against corruption is a complex and ongoing challenge for Zimbabwe. It requires a multifaceted approach that involves not only government but also civil society, the private sector, and individuals.

Chiwenga’s condemnation of corruption marks a significant moment in Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to address this pervasive issue. It highlights the need for collective action and a commitment to transparency and accountability.

Ultimately, the success of Zimbabwe’s anti-corruption efforts will depend on the ability of its leaders to walk the talk and demonstrate a genuine commitment to reform. It will also require the active participation of citizens, who must demand accountability and transparency from those in power.
