Dr. Angela Tabiri, known in Ghana as the Maths Queen, is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She is the first African to win The Big Internet Math Off competition, a testament to her exceptional mathematical skills. Dr. Tabiri’s passion for mathematics is contagious, and she hopes to inspire other African women to pursue careers in mathematics.
Growing up in Ashaiman, a densely populated neighborhood in Tema, Ghana, Dr. Tabiri’s love for mathematics was evident from an early age. She would often seek out the peace and quiet of the local youth community center to study, fascinated by numbers and puzzles. Despite her initial plans to study business administration, Dr. Tabiri’s grades led her to pursue mathematics and economics instead.
Dr. Tabiri’s journey to becoming a renowned mathematician was not without its challenges. She recalls watching the film Hidden Figures, which tells the story of black American women mathematicians who worked at NASA in the 1950s. The film had a profound impact on Dr. Tabiri, inspiring her to persevere in her pursuit of mathematical excellence.
As the academic manager for the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Programme, Dr. Tabiri is dedicated to mentoring high school girls in Ghana. The program, established by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in 2020, aims to provide a pipeline of young girls who will lead in research and innovation in mathematical sciences. Dr. Tabiri’s efforts are crucial in breaking down stereotypes that mathematics is a “boy’s subject.”
Dr. Tabiri’s passion for quantum science and technology is evident in her work. She is proud that Ghana, backed by Mexico, spearheaded proposals for the UN to declare 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Dr. Tabiri hopes to introduce schoolchildren to quantum science at a younger age, organizing a “quantum road show” to inspire the next generation of mathematicians and scientists.
The potential of quantum science and technology is vast, with applications in medicine, environmental sciences, food production, and cybersecurity. Dr. Tabiri emphasizes the importance of positioning Africa’s youth for this next big revolution. With her expertise and passion, Dr. Tabiri is poised to make a significant impact in the world of mathematics and beyond.
As a role model for young girls in Ghana and beyond, Dr. Tabiri’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and passion. Her journey serves as a reminder that mathematics is a field that is accessible to everyone, regardless of gender or background. Dr. Tabiri’s legacy will undoubtedly inspire generations of mathematicians and scientists to come.
In addition to her work with the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Programme, Dr. Tabiri is also the founder of FemAfricMaths, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting African girls and women in mathematics. Through her organization, Dr. Tabiri provides lessons and mentorship to young girls, as well as interviews with leading female mathematicians from around the world.
Dr. Tabiri’s commitment to promoting mathematics education and inspiring young girls is unwavering. Her dedication to her craft and her community is a shining example of the impact one person can have.
