Somaliland has officially welcomed a new president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, following a highly contested presidential election held on November 13, 2024. Abdullahi, the opposition leader of the Waddani party, secured a decisive victory with 63.92% of the votes. Incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi garnered 34.81% of the votes, marking the end of his tenure.

Somaliland’s 33-year quest for international recognition made this election particularly significant. Both Abdullahi and Bihi Abdi campaigned on platforms promising to strengthen democracy, boost economic growth, and secure global recognition. The region has maintained its own government, currency, and security structures despite lacking international recognition, which has limited its access to global finance.

A contentious issue surrounding the election was Somaliland’s secret memorandum of understanding with Ethiopia. The deal grants Ethiopia access to the strategic port of Berbera and a lease of coastal land to build a naval base, potentially in exchange for recognition of Somaliland. This development has sparked heated debates and criticism from various quarters, including the Somali government.

As Abdullahi assumes the presidency, he inherits significant challenges, including navigating complex international relations and addressing the region’s pressing economic and security concerns. The international community will closely monitor Somaliland’s progress under his leadership. Abdullahi’s party has pledged to empower women, promote economic growth, and strengthen institutions.

The election process itself was a testament to Somaliland’s commitment to democracy. Over one million voters cast their ballots across 2,000 polling stations, demonstrating the region’s determination to have its voice heard. The Somaliland National Electoral Commission released provisional results on November 20, 2024, with the Supreme Court confirming the results the following day.

Abdullahi’s victory marks a new beginning for Somaliland, fostering hope for positive change. His leadership will be crucial in shaping the region’s future, and his party’s focus on economic growth and empowerment is expected to bring tangible benefits to the people. As Somaliland embarks on this new era, the world watches with interest, awaiting the outcome of Abdullahi’s presidency.

The international community’s response to Abdullahi’s presidency will be crucial. Recognition from key global players could unlock much-needed financial support and legitimacy for Somaliland. Meanwhile, regional stability and cooperation will depend on Abdullahi’s ability to navigate complex relationships with neighboring countries.

Ultimately, Somaliland’s future hinges on Abdullahi’s leadership and vision. Will he deliver on his campaign promises and steer Somaliland towards international recognition and prosperity? Only time will tell.
