Chidimma Adetshina, representing Nigeria, was crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania on Saturday, November 16, in Mexico City. The law student and model, born and raised in South Africa, made history with her win.

Adetshina’s journey to the crown was not without challenges. She withdrew from the top ten finalists of Miss South Africa in August after facing xenophobic attacks on social media. However, this setback did not deter her from pursuing her dreams.

Four months later, Adetshina became the first runner-up to Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjær Theilvig, who was crowned Miss Universe 2024. Theilvig succeeds Sheynnis Palacios, Miss Nicaragua, and is the first Danish contestant to win the title.

The 73rd Miss Universe Beauty Pageant saw 125 countries participate, with 18 contestants from Africa competing for the crown. This marked a significant milestone for the continent, showcasing its diversity and talent.

Miss Mexico, Miss Thailand, and Miss Venezuela secured the second, third, and fourth runner-up positions, respectively. Adetshina’s achievement is a testament to her resilience and dedication, inspiring many young women across Africa and beyond.

The event was a proud moment for Africa, highlighting the continent’s growing presence in international beauty pageants. Adetshina’s win has sparked celebrations, cementing her place as a role model for aspiring beauty queens and law students alike.
