A devastating car crash in Gauteng province, South Africa, has left a nine-year-old girl dead and two others injured. The alleged driver, 29-year-old Shaun Mogaila, a player for Sekhukhune United, has surrendered to police after initially fleeing the scene.

According to reports, Mogaila’s BMW collided with a car carrying a woman and two children on Wednesday morning. The young girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman and 13-year-old are receiving treatment in hospital. A dashcam video of the crash has gone viral, sparking widespread outrage and debate on social media.

Mogaila, who had played a game against Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane just hours before the accident, handed himself in to Rabie Ridge Police Station. He is expected to face charges of culpable homicide, reckless, and negligent driving. The footballer’s decision to turn himself in has drawn mixed reactions, with some commending his accountability and others expressing anger and sadness over the tragic loss of life.

Sekhukhune United has yet to comment on the incident, which has sent shockwaves through the South African football community. Mogaila’s soccer career includes stints with Highlands Park, TS Galaxy, and Royal AM, and he has even represented South Africa in the 2023 COSAFA Cup. The case has been delayed, and Mogaila’s expected court appearance is pending.
