Kithure Kindiki, a 52-year-old former law professor and current Interior Minister, is poised to become Kenya’s next deputy president. Parliament has approved his nomination to fill the vacant role left by Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached by senators.

Kindiki boasts a strong academic background, holding a master’s degree and a PhD from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He has authored over 30 publications and has extensive experience in public policy, governance, public administration, law-making, constitutional affairs, and legal advice.

Kindiki’s political career began in 2013 as senator for Tharaka-Nithi county, where he served as Senate majority leader for five years. He was re-elected in 2017 and later became the chamber’s deputy speaker until 2020. After President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential election win, Kindiki was appointed to his first cabinet.

As Interior Minister, Kindiki oversaw the response to the anti-tax protests that began in June, resulting in over 40 deaths and 300 injuries. Despite public backlash, Kindiki commended the police for exercising restraint and denied any shoot-to-kill orders.

However, Kindiki’s nomination is pending a court case regarding Gachagua’s impeachment. If Gachagua’s sacking is upheld, Kindiki is likely to become a more loyal deputy to President Ruto. Nevertheless, his stance on human rights issues may face scrutiny.

Kindiki’s appointment has sparked controversy, with many questioning his suitability for the role given his handling of the anti-tax protests. As Kenya awaits the court’s decision, Kindiki’s future as deputy president remains uncertain.
