Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich etched her name in the history books on Sunday, October 13, 2024, by shattering the women’s marathon world record at the prestigious Chicago Marathon.

The 30-year-old champion’s remarkable feat saw her cross the finish line in an astonishing 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 57 seconds, eclipsing Ethiopian Tigst Assefa’s previous record by nearly two minutes.

Chepngetich’s achievement marks a significant milestone in the world of athletics, as she becomes the first woman to complete a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes. This impressive feat solidifies her position as one of the greatest distance runners of all time, showcasing her unwavering dedication and perseverance. With this record-breaking performance, Chepngetich has cemented her status as a legend in the sport.

In a post-race interview, an elated Chepngetich expressed her emotions, saying, “I feel so great, I’m proud of myself. This is my dream that has come true.” She continued, “I’ve fought a lot thinking about the world record, and I have fulfilled it.” Chepngetich’s words echoed her relief and joy, having finally achieved her long-held ambition.

This victory marks Chepngetich’s third win in Chicago, a city that has become synonymous with record-breaking performances. In 2022, she narrowly missed breaking compatriot Brigid Kosgei’s then-world record by a mere 14 seconds. The Chicago course has proven to be a hub for exceptional achievements, with four of the five fastest women’s marathon times achieved there over the last six years.

Chepngetich’s success is a testament to Kenya’s enduring dominance in long-distance running. Her impressive record has sparked widespread celebration, inspiring a new generation of athletes. As the 2019 World Marathon Champion, Chepngetich has consistently demonstrated her exceptional endurance and talent.

The significance of Chepngetich’s achievement extends beyond her individual success. It highlights the progress made by women in athletics, pushing boundaries and redefining what is possible. Her record-breaking performance serves as a motivation for aspiring athletes worldwide, demonstrating the rewards of hard work, determination, and unwavering passion.

Chepngetich’s historic win has left an indelible mark on the world of athletics, solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest distance runners in history.
