Ildar Dadin, a prominent Russian opposition activist, has made the ultimate sacrifice in his fight against Vladimir Putin’s regime. Dadin, 34, was killed in action while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces in the Kharkiv region, according to the Civic Council, the group that recruited him.

Dadin’s journey to becoming a fighter was marked by his unwavering commitment to standing up against oppression. He was first prosecuted under Article 212.1, dubbed “Dadin’s Law,” which criminalized repeat violations of Russia’s increasingly restrictive protest rules. His imprisonment was marked by torture and hunger strikes, but he remained steadfast in his opposition to Putin’s regime.

After his release in 2017, Dadin continued to advocate for change, eventually joining the Freedom of Russia Legion, a volunteer battalion comprised mainly of Russian citizens fighting for Ukraine. Despite considering himself a pacifist, Dadin chose the callsign Gandhi, symbolizing his commitment to nonviolent resistance. However, the severity of Russia’s aggression led him to take up arms.

Dadin’s decision to fight was driven by his strong convictions against Russia’s mass killing, torture, rape, and looting. He felt deeply responsible for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and believed that helping Ukraine defeat Putin would be a crucial step towards ending his rule in the Kremlin. The Freedom of Russia Legion aims to help Ukraine achieve this goal, with recruits mainly consisting of Russian citizens.

Dadin’s experience on the front lines was grueling, with exhaustion, injury, and loss of comrades taking a toll on his physical and mental well-being. Despite this, his conscience wouldn’t allow him to sit idly by while Ukrainians were being killed. His bravery and principles have inspired many, with the Civic Council describing him as “strong, brave, principled, and honest.”
